This paper deals with the economic analysis and management implications of This paper deals with the economic analysis and management implications of extending lactations in specialised dairy cows. The main conclusion from this study is that in the two dairy farm cases that have been investigated in depth, the use of extended lactations to achieve efficient herd reproduction is highly likely to give greater profit than alternative systems that could be implemented. This conclusion holds even after allowing for less than total persistency of cows embarking on extended lactations. The overall outcome of a change from having only 10-month lactations to having some cows in the herd milking for extended lactations is determined by the complex interactions of all of the major input, output, cost and income factors at work in a dairy system. The likely net effects of adopting the extended lactation innovation in a dairy system has to be estimated for each unique farm system, with particular attention paid to the skills and aspirations of the people who operate

Modeling extended lactations of dairy cows.
Nine mathematical models were compared for their ability to predict daily milk yields (n = 294,986) in standard 305-d and extended lactations of dairy cows of Costa Rica. Lactations were classified by parity (first and later), lactation length (9 to 10, 11 to 12, 13 to 14, 15 to 16, and 16 to 17 mo), and calving to conception interval (1 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6, 7 to 8, and 9 to 10 mo). Of the nin...
متن کاملModeling extended lactations of Holsteins.
Modeling extended lactations for the US Holsteins is useful because a majority (>55%) of the cows in the present population produce lactations longer than 305 d. In this study, 9 empirical and mechanistic models were compared for their suitability for modeling 305-d and 999-d lactations of US Holsteins. A pooled data set of 4,266,597 test-day yields from 427,657 (305-d complete) lactation recor...
متن کاملGenetic and phenotypic parameters of lactations longer than 305 days (extended lactations).
Test-day milk yield and somatic cell count data over extended lactation (lactation to 540-600 days) were analysed considering part lactations as different traits and fitting random regression (RR) models. Data on Australian Jersey and Holstein Friesian (HF) were used to demonstrate the shape of the lactation curve and data on HF were used for genetic study. Test-day data from about 100 000 cows...

In this research, estimation of genetic parameters for milk production trait was performed by using collected data from 1991 to 2010 in Iranian Holstein dairy cattle. Genetic parameters were estimated by MATVEC Microsoft, using animal model, with univariate and multivariate analysis. The data set were including 161328, 123369 and 81013 records for first, second and third lactations, respectivel...
متن کاملDefining appropriate model for genetic analysis of milk yield in different lactations of Iranian Holstein cows
In this study, appropriate genetic co (variance) structure across ages of milk production in the Iranian Holstein cows was modeled using 35167 records originated from 1098 sires and 27236 dams. These data were collected from 110 herds during 2011 to 2015 by the Iranian Animal Breeding Center. For all lactations, birth year, birth month, calving year, calving season, calving month, age and herd ...
